- 264: Pushing Too Hard, Crashing, and Rebuilding the Mind
What happens when a high-performance lifestyle hits a physical and mental wall? This week, Nole takes the mic for a solo session to deconstruct his recent "February crash." From a 130-hour fast and a back injury at work to the debilitating mental fog that followed, Nole shares a raw look at what happens when our "push" overrides our physiology. The conversation moves from the gut to the brain, exploring the science of neuroplasticity, the physical restructuring of our neural pathways. Nole discusses why first responders get stuck in "threat-scanning" and "grousing" loops and offers two practical tools to help you rebuild your mind, lower your cortisol, and get back to being present for your family.Key Topics:The Perfect Storm: How extreme fasting, injury, and work stress led to a month-long health crisis. The "Hallway Verses": Re-examining Philippians 4:8 and Romans 12:2 as practical manuals for mental health.Brain Hardware vs. Software: Why you need to "think better" before you can "feel better."First Responder Loops: The cost of staying in hypervigilant "threat-scan" mode once you're off the clock. The Reset Tools: A breakdown of the 5-Minute Journal and the "60-Second Verbal Gratitude Drill."Big thank you to My Epic and Facedown Records for the use of their song "Hail" in our podcast!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dz2RZThURTU&ab_channel=FacedownRecordsGet signed up for the next trip with Hold the Line!https://www.fireupprogram.org/hold-the-lineThe Fire You Carry on YouTube.Sign up for a class at The Fire Up Program!https://www.fireupprogram.com/programsThe Fire Up Progam video.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I__ErPW46Ec&t=12s&ab_channel=FireUpProgramThe Fire You Carry Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/thefireyoucarry/Donate to The Fire Up Program.https://www.fireupprogram.com/donateThe Fire Up Program Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/fireup_program/Kevin's Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/kevinpwelsh/?hl=enMyZone facility code for The Fire You Carry: CALIFUS001Get $60 off a MZ-Switch Heart Rate Monitor!https://buy.myzone.org/?lang=enUS&voucher=CALIFUS001-60
- 263: Shave Your Head & Pay Attention to How Others Perceive You.
In this candid and impromptu conversation, Nole and Kevin dive deep into the "Imposter Syndrome" that often plagues men as they step into leadership roles, whether it’s officiating a wedding for the first time or giving advice to the next generation of firefighters. They explore the tension between staying humble (the "new guy" mindset) and acknowledging the real-world experience and wisdom they have to offer. The duo also discusses the "Parable of the Talents," the importance of "faking it until you make it" through total commitment, and why sometimes you just have to "shave your head" to signal a life-changing transformation.Big thank you to My Epic and Facedown Records for the use of their song "Hail" in our podcast!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dz2RZThURTU&ab_channel=FacedownRecordsThe Fire You Carry on YouTube.Tithemi - Sleeping Gianthttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdxdnVqn08E&list=RDRdxdnVqn08E&start_radio=1Sign up for a class at The Fire Up Program!https://www.fireupprogram.com/programsThe Fire Up Progam video.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I__ErPW46Ec&t=12s&ab_channel=FireUpProgramThe Fire You Carry Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/thefireyoucarry/Donate to The Fire Up Program.https://www.fireupprogram.com/donateThe Fire Up Program Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/fireup_program/Kevin's Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/kevinpwelsh/?hl=enMyZone facility code for The Fire You Carry: CALIFUS001Get $60 off a MZ-Switch Heart Rate Monitor!https://buy.myzone.org/?lang=enUS&voucher=CALIFUS001-60
- 262: The Hand You’re Dealt: Finding Purpose in the Chaos
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the "chaos and drama" of life, especially when the initial fire of the New Year begins to fade. In this solo Sunday episode, Kevin dives into an insightful teaching from Jim Ramos (Men in the Arena) to help listeners move past universal truths and discover their unique, God-given identity. Using this idea as a reference point, Kevin explores how our history, abilities, and passions aren't just random traits; they are tools meant to be used for a greater purpose. - 261: What if We Talked about the Living, the Way We Do about the Dead?
In this high-energy catch-up, Nole and Kevin dive into the patriotic fever of the Winter Olympics, specifically the historic gold medal wins for both the U.S. Men’s and Women’s hockey teams against Canada. Between discussing the "grit and tenacity" of players like Jack Hughes and the bizarrely fascinating world of Scottish curling stones, the duo gets personal about their recent struggles with illness and the mental toll of the "firefighter trap"—working long overtime stretches at the station. The heart of the episode shifts to a deep discussion on legacy and intentionality. Inspired by a recent celebration of life, Nole and Kevin explore why society reserves its best praise for funerals and how they can start "breathing life" into their families and colleagues while they are still around to hear it.Big thank you to My Epic and Facedown Records for the use of their song "Hail" in our podcast!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dz2RZThURTU&ab_channel=FacedownRecordsThe Fire You Carry on YouTube.Sign up for a class at The Fire Up Program!https://www.fireupprogram.com/programsThe Fire Up Progam video.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I__ErPW46Ec&t=12s&ab_channel=FireUpProgramThe Fire You Carry Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/thefireyoucarry/Donate to The Fire Up Program.https://www.fireupprogram.com/donateThe Fire Up Program Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/fireup_program/Kevin's Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/kevinpwelsh/?hl=enMyZone facility code for The Fire You Carry: CALIFUS001Get $60 off a MZ-Switch Heart Rate Monitor!https://buy.myzone.org/?lang=enUS&voucher=CALIFUS001-60

What is keeping you from starting that new hobby, joining that fitness program, or trying something you might be "bad" at? In this solo episode, Nole reflects on a recent trip to the skate park with his 10-year-old son, Indy. Watching his son skate at the park with the "wrong" gear and a borrowed helmet, Nole realized how often our adult egos act as a barrier to entry for things that bring us joy. - 259: Burn Your Ears: Why Experience is the Best Mentor with Captain Scotty McKnight
In this episode, Nole and Kevin sit down with Captain Scotty McKnight, currently serving at the "Fire Factory" (FS 16) in the heart of Los Angeles County. Scotty brings a unique perspective to the fire service, having transitioned from a professional baseball career to the front seat of a fire engine. The guys dive into the parallels between the elite environments of professional sports and the fire service, the mental game of visualization, and the weight of "failing" on the big stage. Scotty shares raw insights on his journey through the minor leagues, the grit required for 16-hour bus rides, and why he believes young firefighters must seek out "busy" houses to truly learn the craft.Big thank you to My Epic and Facedown Records for the use of their song "Hail" in our podcast!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dz2RZThURTU&ab_channel=FacedownRecordsThe Fire You Carry on YouTube.Sign up for a class at The Fire Up Program!https://www.fireupprogram.com/programsThe Fire Up Progam video.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I__ErPW46Ec&t=12s&ab_channel=FireUpProgramThe Fire You Carry Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/thefireyoucarry/Donate to The Fire Up Program.https://www.fireupprogram.com/donateThe Fire Up Program Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/fireup_program/Kevin's Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/kevinpwelsh/?hl=enMyZone facility code for The Fire You Carry: CALIFUS001Get $60 off a MZ-Switch Heart Rate Monitor!https://buy.myzone.org/?lang=enUS&voucher=CALIFUS001-60
- 258: Don't Be "That Guy": Survive Your First Day on Probation as a Fireman
Getting hired is only the beginning. In this episode, Nole and Kevin pull back the curtain on the "paramilitary" traditions and unwritten rules that define a successful probationary year. This isn't about what’s in the manual—it's about the grit, etiquette, and mindset required to earn your place in the firehouse. From the "ninja entry" at 0600 to the humility of being the first to volunteer for a drill, we discuss how to build a reputation that lasts a career. - 255: Fire Built: Heat, Cold, and Heavy Swings, with Evan Halquist.
Captain Evan Halquist is back for another round, and he's here to announce a new resource that we have been anxiously awaiting here at The Fire You Carry. Fire Built is a purpose-driven set of training protocols designed for the first responder that will benefit anyone who puts them into practice. Follow the links below to learn more. When the tones don’t stop going off, how do you show up for your family the next morning? When you're exhausted from all that life throws at you, how do you keep pushing through when you need to? In this episode, Kevin and Nole sit down with Captain Evan Halquist to dive deep into the physiological "reset button" for first responders.Evan breaks down the science of recovery, explaining why typical rest isn't enough after a high-cortisol shift. We explore his Bad Night Protocol, the hidden dangers of "forever chemicals" in firefighting gear, and his fascinating experiment in "Anti-Glycolytic" training—proving that strength is the ultimate foundation for endurance. Whether you are a firefighter, a tactical athlete, or a busy parent, Evan’s insights on Fire Built resilience offer a blueprint for thriving in the face of chaos.Big thank you to My Epic and Facedown Records for the use of their song "Hail" in our podcast!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dz2RZThURTU&ab_channel=FacedownRecordsThe Fire You Carry on YouTube.https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCq8gk9sDd1NsBsJrPMY3gtwEvan on Instagram (see his linktree here for the Fire Built app)https://www.instagram.com/evan_halquist/Sign up for a class at The Fire Up Program!https://www.fireupprogram.com/programsThe Fire Up Progam video.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I__ErPW46Ec&t=12s&ab_channel=FireUpProgramThe Fire You Carry Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/thefireyoucarry/Donate to The Fire Up Program.https://www.fireupprogram.com/donateThe Fire Up Program Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/fireup_program/Kevin's Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/kevinpwelsh/?hl=enMyZone facility code for The Fire You Carry: CALIFUS001Get $60 off a MZ-Switch Heart Rate Monitor!https://buy.myzone.org/?lang=enUS&voucher=CALIFUS001-60

In this special pre-Christmas episode, Kevin sits down with Captain Jon Engle of the Colton Fire Department. Jon shares a vulnerable and powerful testimony of enduring a "season of shadows"—losing his grandfather, a fellow engineer, a childhood friend, and his brother in a short span, all while navigating a life-threatening medical crisis with his newborn son.The heart of the episode is the announcement that Jon’s nonprofit, Hold the Line Fishing, has officially merged with The Fire Up Program. - 253: Ignoring the Mundane at Our Own Peril
In this solo episode, Nole dives deep into the tension between the cultural push for men to be extraordinary and the profound value of simply embracing the ordinary—or the mundane—in daily life.Inspired by a simple observation about a frantic lemur at an animal park ("He leads a simple life"), Nole explores the idea that while high-achieving goals (like a podcast, an adventure race, or a career milestone) are important, they occupy only a tiny fraction of our time. The bulk of our lives is spent on the ordinary, often overlooked tasks.Using the concept of the Time Wheel (a pie chart of your daily hours), Nole argues that if your stated priorities don't align with where you actually spend your time, you may be missing the most important opportunities for growth and fulfillment. He challenges men to approach the mundane—from laundry and cooking to exercise and even brushing teeth—with excellence and gratitude. This focus on doing the small things well is presented as a form of discipline that "bleeds" into the rest of life, strengthening relationships and fueling the pursuit of bigger goals. Ultimately, it’s about finding the balance to ensure that the pursuit of excellence doesn't turn us into slaves of busyness, robbing us of time for peace, reflection, and truly appreciating life.Big thank you to My Epic and Facedown Records for the use of their song "Hail" in our podcast!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dz2RZThURTU&ab_channel=FacedownRecordsVideo referenced in this episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mY3UJLmXAUQSign up for a class at The Fire Up Program!https://www.fireupprogram.com/programsThe Fire Up Progam video.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I__ErPW46Ec&t=12s&ab_channel=FireUpProgramThe Fire You Carry Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/thefireyoucarry/Donate to The Fire Up Program.https://www.fireupprogram.com/donateThe Fire Up Program Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/fireup_program/Kevin's Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/kevinpwelsh/?hl=enMyZone facility code for The Fire You Carry: CALIFUS001Get $60 off a MZ-Switch Heart Rate Monitor!https://buy.myzone.org/?lang=enUS&voucher=CALIFUS001-60
- 252: You Are Groaning, and You Should Stop.
In this episode, Nole and Kevin tackle a seemingly small but significant habit: subconscious groaning and complaining. Inspired by a clip from Jocko Willink's camp, the hosts realize that those small sounds—like groaning when you stand up or sighing when the tones drop—are forms of negative self-talk and a passive concession to "letting the old man in."The conversation digs into how this mindset affects your performance as a first responder and your daily life, the stoic philosophy of Sisu, and the eternal balance between adapting to age and outright surrender. - 251: Kevin & the 4x4x48
In this intensely personal and inspiring episode, Kevin dives deep into his recent experience completing David Goggins' legendary 4x4x48 challenge—running 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours. What started as a daunting personal pursuit, fueled by years of hesitation, transformed into a profound spiritual and mental breakthrough on the historic Naval Base Coronado in San Diego.Joined by his "savage" crew, Kevin pushed past his physical limits (running 10 miles farther than he ever had before!) and battled severe sleep deprivation and digestive issues.Hear Kevin's raw, honest moment of nearly quitting at the 20-mile mark, the Bible verse that flipped his mental switch, and how the presence of family and military inspiration changed the entire meaning of the challenge. This episode explores the critical roles of brotherhood, the danger of comfort, the power of the Misogi concept (one epic yearly challenge), and the life-changing lessons learned about faith, perseverance, and sacrifice. Finally, Nole shares his personal challenge for the month of December—a daily commitment to cold exposure—and invites the listener to join him.Big thank you to My Epic and Facedown Records for the use of their song "Hail" in our podcast!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dz2RZThURTU&ab_channel=FacedownRecordsSend Nole an email: nolerltw@gmail.comJoin the Telegram group: https://t.me/+pSg4QvG4e681MzYxSign up for a class at The Fire Up Program!https://www.fireupprogram.com/programsMyZone facility code for The Fire You Carry: CALIFUS001Get $60 off a MZ-Switch Heart Rate Monitor!https://buy.myzone.org/?lang=enUS&voucher=CALIFUS001-60The Fire Up Progam video.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I__ErPW46Ec&t=12s&ab_channel=FireUpProgramThe Fire You Carry Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/thefireyoucarry/Donate to The Fire Up Program.https://www.fireupprogram.com/donateThe Fire Up Program Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/fireup_program/Kevin's Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/kevinpwelsh/?hl=enNole's Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/nolelilley/?hl=en

The Analog Advantage: Why We Should All Carry a NotebookNole flies solo this week to discuss a personal habit he started for simplicity that turned out to have powerful scientific backing: carrying a paper notebook and pen. Frustrated with missed notifications and the constant need to pull out his phone for reminders, Nole made the switch to analog note-taking for daily tasks. This episode dives deep into the science that proves this "old-fashioned" way is actually superior for learning, memory, and cognitive health.Big thank you to My Epic and Facedown Records for the use of their song "Hail" in our podcast!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dz2RZThURTU&ab_channel=FacedownRecordsSend Nole an email: nolerltw@gmail.comJoin the Telegram group: https://t.me/+pSg4QvG4e681MzYxSign up for a class at The Fire Up Program!https://www.fireupprogram.com/programsMyZone facility code for The Fire You Carry: CALIFUS001Get $60 off a MZ-Switch Heart Rate Monitor!https://buy.myzone.org/?lang=enUS&voucher=CALIFUS001-60The Fire Up Progam video.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I__ErPW46Ec&t=12s&ab_channel=FireUpProgramThe Fire You Carry Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/thefireyoucarry/Donate to The Fire Up Program.https://www.fireupprogram.com/donateThe Fire Up Program Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/fireup_program/Kevin's Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/kevinpwelsh/?hl=enNole's Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/nolelilley/?hl=en

Nole is missing in action (at the firehouse!), so Kevin steps up to the mic for a powerful solo episode. Fresh off the high of the Fire Up Program's Class 14, Kevin shares an immediate and personal debrief of the weekend. He discusses why it's so difficult—and so necessary—for first responders to take a "tactical pause" away from both work and family to reset and build resilience. - 247: Perception, Integrity, & Hiding the Mop.
What's your motivation? In the firehouse, there are a million "unwritten rules." From leaving "veto in the toilet" to making sure there's "water on the ground" after washing the rig, many tasks are done simply to prove they were done. In this episode, Nole and Kevin dive deep into this unique aspect of firehouse culture, exploring the line between maintaining perception and acting with true integrity. They discuss whether our actions are driven by a need for recognition or by a commitment to doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. - 245: Safety Second with Jim Stitzinger
In this thought-provoking episode, Nole and Kevin welcome their good friend, Pastor Jim Stitzinger, back to the show. They dive deep into a powerful concept from an article Jim wrote: Safety Second. This idea presents a revolutionary paradigm shift, challenging the common prayer to "keep us safe." Jim argues that when we make personal safety our ultimate priority, it can lead down a path of compromise and fear. Instead, the scriptures call us to pray for things like boldness, holiness, courage, and discernment. The conversation explores how this mindset applies directly to the lives of first responders, parents, and anyone striving to live a faith-driven life. They discuss the importance of being prepared for challenges, trusting in God's plan, and focusing on what truly matters: our character over our comfort and our holiness over our health. This is a must-listen for anyone looking to sharpen their prayer life and live with greater purpose and courage.Safety Second post by Pastor Jimhttps://jimstitzinger.com/uncategorized/safety-second-how-should-christians-pray/Crossroads Community Churchhttps://crossroadscommunitychurch.net/about/Debrief on demandhttps://crossroadscommunitychurch.churchcenter.com/people/forms/1048142Big thank you to My Epic and Facedown Records for the use of their song "Hail" in our podcast!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dz2RZThURTU&ab_channel=FacedownRecordsSend Nole an email: nolerltw@gmail.comSign up for a class at The Fire Up Program!https://www.fireupprogram.com/programsMyZone facility code for The Fire You Carry: CALIFUS001Get $60 off a MZ-Switch Heart Rate Monitor!https://buy.myzone.org/?lang=enUS&voucher=CALIFUS001-60The Fire Up Progam video.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I__ErPW46Ec&t=12s&ab_channel=FireUpProgramThe Fire You Carry Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/thefireyoucarry/Donate to The Fire Up Program.https://www.fireupprogram.com/donateThe Fire Up Program Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/fireup_program/Kevin's Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/kevinpwelsh/?hl=enNole's Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/nolelilley/?hl=en

He shares a raw, personal story of facing a powerful moment of temptation in his own journey to quit nicotine and introduces a simple yet profound phrase to use as a weapon in those moments: "It's not enough."This episode is a challenge to look past the "mediocre things" we use to find temporary peace and instead focus on the one thing that offers true, lasting fulfillment: a relationship with God.Sign up for this year's 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb! https://www.eventbrite.com/e/911-memorial-climb-tickets-1302529443629?aff=oddtdtcreatorBig thank you to My Epic and Facedown Records for the use of their song "Hail" in our podcast!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dz2RZThURTU&ab_channel=FacedownRecordsSend Nole an email: nolerltw@gmail.comSign up for a class at The Fire Up Program!https://www.fireupprogram.com/programsMyZone facility code for The Fire You Carry: CALIFUS001Get $60 off a MZ-Switch Heart Rate Monitor!https://buy.myzone.org/?lang=enUS&voucher=CALIFUS001-60The Fire Up Progam video.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I__ErPW46Ec&t=12s&ab_channel=FireUpProgramThe Fire You Carry Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/thefireyoucarry/Donate to The Fire Up Program.https://www.fireupprogram.com/donateThe Fire Up Program Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/fireup_program/Kevin's Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/kevinpwelsh/?hl=enNole's Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/nolelilley/?hl=en

- 208: Miguel Aguilar, Rest in Peace Brother.
Miguel Aguilar came on the podcast with Kevin back in December of 2021. His story is truly inspiring and well worth your time. We are reposting this episode because Miguel has tragically passed away. A few months ago, he was followed home by four men who attempted to rob him at gunpoint. Details of what went on are scarce, but we do know that Miguel was shot and spent the past few months fighting for his life. We wanted to repost this episode to honor his memory and to allow those who knew him and loved him to hear from him again, to hear some of what made him the man he was, the man that so many loved. Our prayers are with his family; we hope you will join us. Thank you for listening. The original show notes are included below. In this episode, Kevin talks with Miguel Aguilar about his incredible and inspiring story of being abandoned by his mom at age 12, ending up homeless at 16 to where he is now as a very successful entrepreneur. Miguel is very honest about the struggles he has had through life and the lessons he learned along the way. His willingness to share honestly the path that he has walked to get where he is today is humbling and we want to thank him for taking the time to sit down with Kevin and tell his story. In this week's episode, Kevin and Nole reflect on keeping our focus on the things that matter most. We recently had another death in our department, which always provides a moment to reflect on how tomorrow is never guaranteed. When it comes to Christmas or any other holiday or special event it is also a good time to reflect on the things that really matter in a season where so much emphasis is put on "things". He went on from there to be a fireman paramedic with us at Los Angeles County, and in the episode, we cover that transition. - 203: Color Code of Awareness with Trevor Graves
In this week's episode, we are joined by Trevor Graves! Trevor came to us with an episode idea, and we quickly roped him into coming on the show to talk about it. The idea from this episode came from a hair-raising experience that Trevor had, along with something he learned in a CCW class he attended that got him looking at the world differently than he consciously had before. The concept of being situationally aware is not a new on,e and neither is the structure of the Color Code of Awareness, which was created by Col. Jeff Cooper back in the 70s. The lessons here, though, are so applicable to anyone in the world today, regardless of whether or not you are someone who carries a gun or other weapon in your daily life. We guarantee that you will come away from this episode with some actionable steps to implement in your life that will make you safer and make your family safer in the world. Thank you to Trevor for coming on the show today! Enjoy. - 202: Putting Your Faith in the Wrong Places
In this week's episode, Nole shares a personal and somewhat embarrassing story from a time in his life when he put too much of his faith and belief in a man, a man who ended up failing him, at least in his perspective. Where else do we tend to do this in life? What is the right thing to do? Where should we be putting our faith? We delve into all of that in this episode. In this week's episode, Nole sits down with Captain Michael Knobbe. If you're a long-time listener to the podcast, you know Michael from episode number 2, along with a couple of others where he guest hosted with us. Today, we're getting into why Michael chose to move his family out of Southern California to Idaho and the pros and cons that go along with that. We also discuss a pretty devastating injury that he sustained last year and how he has come back stronger than ever. Towards the end of the podcast, we also delve into the edges of a political discussion and talk a little bit about religion as well. Basically, we do a lot of weaving. - 199: Kevin Are You Ok?
In this week's episode, Kevin gets personal about something he's been struggling with, how it came to his attention, and what he's doing about it. We all need to have corner men in our lives to help us when we're going through the fights of life, and this is an excellent example of what that could look like. The storms or fights in life are not always obvious to those going through them; sometimes, we need a brother, a wife, or a friend to come alongside us to point them out and walk through them with us. - 198: Five Ways to Not Create Spoiled Brats, or Five Ways to Affirm Your Children
In this week's episode, we're talking through 5 ways to affirm your children without creating a spoiled child that's intolerable to be around and unable to operate in society. These points come to us from a great email Kevin received from Men in the Arena and it contains great points that both of us learned from, so we know you will too. It might be time to start saying no. It might be time to take a break. Yes, you are tough; yes, you can do more, help more, show up more, but should you? In this week's episode, Kevin and Nole delve into the phenomenon of the false summit. Many of us have encountered this during our adventures out in the wilds, and like many things we come in contact with in the physical world, it contains some poignant life lessons. We also dig into using these principles as training tools by working through ways to harden your resilience and build your mental toughness using the false summit.Big thank you to My Epic and Facedown Records for the use of their song "Hail" in our podcast!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dz2RZThURTU&ab_channel=FacedownRecordsSign up for a class at The Fire Up Program!https://www.fireupprogram.com/programsMyZone facility code for The Fire You Carry: CALIFUS001Get $60 off a MZ-Switch Heart Rate Monitor!https://buy.myzone.org/?lang=enUS&voucher=CALIFUS001-60The Fire Up Progam video.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I__ErPW46Ec&t=12s&ab_channel=FireUpProgramThe Fire You Carry Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/thefireyoucarry/Donate to The Fire Up Program.https://www.fireupprogram.com/donateThe Fire Up Program Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/fireup_program/Kevin's Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/kevinpwelsh/?hl=enNole's Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/nolelilley/?hl=enJoin us on Discord.https://discord.gg/rkDa9Ae27qBuy us a coffee to support the podcast.https://discord.gg/rkDa9Ae27qBuy podcast apparel.https://thefireyoucarry.threadless.

- 194: When Leadership Fails to Communicate.
In this week's episode, we are talking about the detrimental effects of ineffective or nonexistent communication down the chain of command. In the large organization we work for, there often seems to be a lack of communication as to why things are done, what the mission is, or the reasons behind it; we have found this to be very detrimental for a whole host of reasons. We also tie this into communication at home with our wives and families, how we can do a better job in those arenas, and why that's important. Additionally, we talk briefly about how to best communicate up the chain of command for those of us on the lower ends of the leadership structure and why this is equally important and must be done properly. - 193: Stabbed Nearly to Death During a Routine Medical Call, with Capitan Ben Vernon.
In this week's episode, we are joined by Captian Ben Vernon of San Diego City Fire. During a routine medical call, Ben and one of his fellow firefighters found themselves fighting for their lives and wound up getting stabbed multiple times. Ben takes us through that harrowing experience and then details how it dramatically changed his life, almost ending it. This riveting episode contains graphic descriptions of violence and some profanity, so if you are sensitive to that type of content, listener discretion is advised. - 192: The Cost
In this week's episode, Kevin and Nole discuss some of the cons and costs associated with being firemen. They endeavor to answer, "Would you still sign up if you knew what you know now about the job?". While the main topic here is the difficulties our department and so many others are experiencing, we know that guys in the "civilian" world will also be able to relate to most of this. When times get tough as you work to provide for a family and build a career, what's the best path forward? What are some best practices to implement as you launch into a new career in the fire service or anywhere else? Let us know your thoughts; we'd love to hear from you! - 191: The Gentle Slope.
The world has sold us on the idea that we deserve to be comfortable at every moment. The world is wrong. Embracing that idea is keeping us mediocre; it's keeping us stuck. It's keeping us from growing. We need to step up as men and put in the hard work to do the right thing instead of the expedient thing. We need to embrace suffering and discomfort because that is where we grow and begin to reach our full potential. - 190: Stolen Valor
In this week's episode, Nole talks about stolen valor. This is an issue that has emerged on the national political stage and while we don't really do current events this is an issue that falls in line with our mission here at The Fire You Carry. For those in the civilian world, this episode should be helpful for you to better understand what stolen valor means and what you can or should do about it. For those in the veteran community, this episode should also give you some ways to think about this and some ideas on how to approach it when you come in contact with it. In this week's episode, we are joined by our good friend Scott Henderson. Scott is a firefighter paramedic with Pasadena Fire, a husband, and a father. He joins us today to talk about The Battle for Mental Health, a boxing event fundraiser that he started in 2019 to raise money for our friends over at Next Rung. With this year's event coming up in October and some exciting challenges on the horizon for Scott, we thought this would be a great time to have him on to encourage you to get involved and plan on coming out to the event in October. - 187: Are You Humble, Or Are You Hiding?
In this week's episode, Kevin and Nole dig into our thoughts on humility. Humility is a good personality trait and something we aspire to, but can it be taken too far? Are we holding ourselves back and limiting our impact for good on those around us out of a misguided idea that being humble means never personally recognizing the things we are good at? - 186: Some Life Lessons Gleaned From Loosing Children, Or, Life Lessons Learned The Hard Way.
In this episode, Nole goes solo to talk through some of the lessons he has picked up along the way after the deaths of two of his and his wife's sons. This episode was recorded close to the 19-year anniversary of the loss of their first son and is something that Nole has felt called to record for years, only recently finding the courage and motivation to do so. While the lessons here stem from a particular type of loss, Nole does his best to connect those lessons to other life experiences that you have likely walked through or will at some point in your life. In this week's episode, we are joined by Lt. Col. Dave Grossman. Rather than tell you who he is, we recommend you go to his website, read his bio, and come back here. Link here. https://www.grossmanacademy.com/about-the-colonel In our time with the Lt. In this week's episode, Kevin and Nole are joined once again by John Estrada. John last came on our show back on episode 40 to talk about fatherhood, and we had an excellent conversation on the subject. Today John is back to talk about his sobriety. - 180: On Post Traumatic Stress & How Nole Has Been Failing To Deal With It Properly
In this week's episode, Nole shares his recent struggles with Post Traumatic Stress and his failure to deal with it in the ways he knows work. Kevin also shares his perspective on dealing with similar struggles, and we delve into what we know works when dealing with difficult times in our lives. Often, there is a separation between what we know we should do and what we actually do. Nole has been in that place of late, but it's time to go into the storm and start doing the hard things because we know there is only one way out, and that's through. Regardless of where you're at in life today, we think that candid conversations like this about the things we struggle with are good for us to participate in and we encourage you to find a good group of corner men that you can have talks like this with. Don't know where to find those guys? Try coming up to The Fire Up Program in October, it's a great place to start. Links are below. In this week's episode, Nole talks through the Ranger Creed, why it exists and what it means in his life now, so many years removed from his time in the 75th Ranger Regiment. Nole's time in Ranger Battlaion shaped a lot of who he is as a man today and the Ranger Creed was a part of that. - 178: Tribute To A Great Man, Leon Broussard III, Pops.
In this week's episode, Kevin and Nole discuss Pops, Kevin's stepdad. As you know, Pops recently passed away. In honor of him and the amazing legacy he leaves behind, we thought it would be fitting to talk about just a few of the attributes that made this man who he was and discuss how we could implement those into our own lives moving forward. We also discuss how to grieve as a man and the importance of doing so. - 176: Leap Of Faith, With Josh Smith.
In this week's episode, Nole is joined by Josh Smith. Josh is a friend from Hume Lake and this episode focuses in on Josh's journey of faith and the lessons learned through it. The primary focus is on trusting God, and taking "leaps of faith" as He calls us into things that don't make sense to us, and resisting the temptation to rely on our own strengths or experience. In this week's episode, we are joined by Jim King, Vice President of the California Police Athletic Federation. Jim is a retired fireman passionate about the incredible benefits available to everyone through sport & competition. In this episode, we talk through some of the amazing ways competition can benefit those of us in the first-responder communities. However, the benefits are not exclusive to those of us serving in those careers; they exist for everyone. Jim also talks with us about the upcoming Police and Fire Games that will be held in San Diego, June 8th - 15th. We strongly encourage you to follow the links below, find something you'd like to compete in, and go for it. - 174: Brady Mclean, Go Fast Don't Die.
In this week's episode, we are joined by Brady Mclean of Go Fast Don't Die. Brady thought his life had essentially come to an end at age 28 after going through a divorce. This experience deeply shook Brady and forced him to reconsider his life's story and take stock of whether or not it was one he was proud to tell. One of the things that rose from the ashes of this time in his life was Go Fast Don't Die. Put simply, Go Fast Don't Die is a motorcycle brand that encourages those who don't think they fit into the motorcycle scene, or any other scene for that matter, to find instead their community where they do fit in or make their own. It embraces the idea that the best communities, scenes, tribes, or groups are not exclusionary based on something so innocuous as what kind of motorcycle you ride, what music you listen to, or almost anything else. Go Fast Don't Die is also a brand that promotes the idea of fighting against the "small deaths" that we all to often find ourselves living out in our own lives. We do not live up to our full potential because we are afraid of something, too lazy, or just stuck in the rut of what we've always done. All of the heart behind Go Fast Don't Die comes from Brady and his life experience, which is what we primarily dig into in this episode. Ensure you follow the links in the show notes below, get on Brady's Instagram and tell him we sent you, go to the Go Fast Don't Die website and sign up for their email list, maybe even buy a shirt. Personally, I have already done both. - NoleBig thank you to My Epic and Facedown Records for the use of their song "Hail" in our podcast!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dz2RZThURTU&ab_channel=FacedownRecordsBrady on Instagram. https://www.instagram.com/bradytildeath/?hl=enGo Fast Don't Diehttps://www.gofastdontdie.com/David Ramirez, "The Bad Days"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_FkhCVg-1s&ab_channel=DavidRamirezMyZone facility code for The Fire You Carry: CALIFUS001Get $60 off a MZ-Switch Heart Rate Monitor!https://buy.myzone.org/?lang=enUS&voucher=CALIFUS001-60The Fire Up Progam video.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I__ErPW46Ec&t=12s&ab_channel=FireUpProgramThe Fire You Carry Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/thefireyoucarry/Sign up for a class at The Fire Up Program!https://www.fireupprogram.com/programsDonate to The Fire Up Program.https://www.fireupprogram.com/donateThe Fire Up Program Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/fireup_program/Kevin's Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/kevinpwelsh/?hl=enNole's Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/nolelilley/?hl=enJoin us on Discord.https://discord.gg/rkDa9Ae27qBuy us a coffee to support the podcast.https://discord.gg/rkDa9Ae27qBuy podcast apparel.https://thefireyoucarry.threadless.com

In this week's episode, Captain Halquist is back to discuss how to best approach a day following a bad night of sleep. This protocol comes both from actual science and his own personal observations while working at one of the busiest fire stations in the world. Whether or not you work as a fireman, this protocol will benefit your life and improve the quality of that life if adhered to. There is great information here, so be ready to take some notes! Links to some things mentioned in the episode are in the show notes below. - 170: Not The Solution, With Jeremy Stalnecker
In this episode of The Fire You Carry, Kevin and Nole are joined again by their good friend Jeremy Stalnecker. Jeremy is one of the founders of The Mighty Oaks Warrior Foundation, an author and podcast host. The topic today is suicide. We approach this difficult topic from the perspective that there is hope and there is a solution for those of us who would seek to put a stop to the tragic toll that suicide is taking, not only in our department and the broader first responder, military veteran community but also nationwide across all communities. Jeremey and Mighty Oaks have recently released a new resource in this fight, a book titled "Not The Solution" that you can download for free using the link below. While this is a hard topic to talk about and, at times, can be hard to listen to, we think it is imperative, and we appreciate you taking the time to listen. Follow the links below to learn more about Mighty Oaks, their resources, and Jeremey. - 169: Our Culture Is Killing Us & What To Do About It, With Captain Evan Halquist.
In this episode of The Fire You Carry, we are joined again by Captain Evan Halquist. Evan came on the show today specifically to talk about something he is very passionate about, the fact that so much of what we are doing as men today, thinking that it's beneficial, is quite detrimental. With this knowledge in hand, we address the ways we can adjust our lives and start to change the culture around us, to obtain better outcomes for us and the men around us. - 168: Getting Those Around You To Start Executing "Extreme Ownership"
In today's episode, it's story time! We share multiple stories highlighting some principles of taking "extreme ownership". Specifically with a mind to demonstrating it for those around us and thus making it part of the culture that we are in. If you enjoy fireground/firehouse stories, this one is for you. Terms like "leading by example", "extreme ownership", "leaders eat last" and so on, are ingrained in our culture. But how often do we know what they mean, how to implement them, or how to encourage others to implement them? With the sharing of a few simple, real-world stories we highlight some of the ways we think passing on the leadership principle of "extreme ownership" can be possible.Listen to the end for a reading of another epic review of the podcast!
